The Challenge
Mahikeng Local Municipality was operating on an IT infrastructure that had not seen a major upgrade in over a decade. Staff experienced frequent network outages, slow file-sharing systems, and an email platform that struggled under the volume of daily communication. Citizen-facing services were often delayed because back-end systems could not keep up with demand.
Our Approach
Livity ICT conducted a comprehensive infrastructure audit and developed a phased modernisation plan. In the first phase, we replaced end-of-life switches and routers with Cisco enterprise equipment, deployed a new structured cabling backbone, and migrated email to Microsoft 365. The second phase introduced a centralised document management system and secure remote-access capabilities for field workers.
The Results
- Network uptime improved from 87% to 99.5% within three months of deployment.
- Email delivery times dropped from minutes to seconds, eliminating a major source of staff frustration.
- Citizen service requests are now processed 40% faster thanks to the new document management workflow.
This project demonstrates what is possible when a municipality partners with an ICT provider that understands both the technology and the unique operational realities of local government in South Africa.
